If you enjoy going to gigs, and you are heading to Australia, you’ll probably want to know where the best live music venues are. While there are obviously plenty of huge venues where global acts can play to thousands of fans at a time, most of the legendary Australian venues are of the smaller variety, where up and coming acts play for smaller, but no less enthusiastic audiences. Here are some of the best places to see new musical talent in Australia:
The Esplanade, St Kilda, Melbourne
The ‘Espy’, as it is more commonly known, has been in business since the 1870s and is now protected by Australia’s National Trust. This historic venue features a lot of its original details, making it a particularly atmospheric place to see up and coming bands. In recent times, it has seen electrifying performances by the likes of Jet, Dallas Crane, Paul Kelly, and the Kills.
The Zoo, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane
Arguably the coolest place in the capital of Queensland, the Zoo was a pool hall and café when it opened in the early nineties, but over the years it has become more widely known as a music venue. Its laid-back, polite atmosphere make it a popular hang out for local musos and fans, and many of the bar staff are in bands themselves. Over the years it has seen performances by soon-to-be-big Aussie acts such as Regurgitator and Powderfinger, as well as gigs by international stars such as Gomez, Ben Harper, and Mogwai.
The Basement, Circular Quay, Sydney
The Basement is a cool little jazz club that has been around for decades. While it does occasionally host performances by non-jazz musicians, such as Kasey Chambers, Barnesy, and the Whitlams, jazz is very much the order of the day here. Over the years, it has seen legendary performances by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie and Georgie Fame.
The Fly By Night, Fremantle, Western Australia
While Perth has a fair selection of small music venues, few of them can hold a candle to the Fly By Night in neighbouring Fremantle. This venue and club is dedicated to the local music scene, and it has seen a number of performances over the years by bands who went on to hit the big time, such as The John Butler Trio, The Waifs, The Panics and Eskimo Joe. However, there have been a fair few performances by already established international acts here, such as Ani DiFranco, Xavier Rudd, The Go-Betweens and Bic Runga.
