How To Enjoy Luxury Travel on a Shoestring Budget in Australia

on Saturday, 16 April 2011. Posted in Other Sydney Guides 712

{mnf=off}Although prices seem to keep rising on almost everything, travel can still be an affordable way to spend a weekend.  Here are some tips for saving money on your next excursion.

Cheap Eats

Several spots in some of the best cities offer excellent food at a great price.

  1. Octopus, chorizo and aioli in Melbourne – Travel down to Gertrude Street for some good eats at low prices.  Take a seat at Cutler and Co., choose something good from the menu and watch bike couriers as they pass by the window.
  2. Fish and chips, on the go in Sydney – If you enjoy ferry rides, you will love the trip from Circular Quay over to Sydney.  Enjoy your food while soaking up the sea air.  After you finish, take a stroll in Sydney Harbour National Park.

Take In the Culture

People who like to explore the origins of a country and learn all about their culture will love the Australian museums. Most of the major exhibits and the primary museums are totally free to all visitors.  You can even plan your entire trip on the Australia tourism website.  Here are some of the more popular places to visit.

  1. Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney
  2. Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane
  3. National Museum of Australia in Canberra
  4. National Gallery of Victoria International in Melbourne

Drive In Luxury

Taking advantage of discounted luxury car rentals in Sydney from DriveMyCarRentals.com.au for a great way to drive a top import like a BMW or a Porsche at an incredible price.  A luxury car rental is a great way to see the lovely sights of Sydney and the rest of Australia in style. The freedom of a rental car will give you the option of traveling on your schedule rather than waiting on a bus, tram or group tour.

Plunge Into the Wild

Zoos and wild animal parks adorn the landscape throughout Australia.  But there are also many natural habitat areas free of charge and full of wildlife within a short drive of many of Australia’s major cities.

  1. Bennetts Ridge Campground in Euroka, New South Wales – Just a short drive from Sydney visitors are almost promised a sighting of a kangaroo.
  2. Tidal River Campground in Victoria – Wombats are plentiful at this area and it is common for them to fearlessly approach people.
  3. Alligator Creek Campground, in Queensland – Despite the name Wallabies are plentiful at this spot located south of Cairns

Regardless of whether you like to witness wildlife, learn more about the history and origins of a country or simply enjoy some good food at a casual spot, there are plenty of ways to enjoy elegant services at an affordable price in Australia.

Sydney Airport Guide

on Tuesday, 30 November 1999. Posted in Other Sydney Guides 2433

sydney-planes2 if you’re flying into Sydney you’ll be flying into Terminal 1, the International Terminal.

the airport is located at Sydney Kingsford Smith, a suburb about 25 mins drive from the city CBD.
so you’ve got a few options of getting into town once you’ve grabbed your bags and made your way through customs.

buses
if you haven’t pre-booked your bus ticket with your hostel or hotel ( which, by the way is a really tops idea if you can – saves the hassle) you can try your luck catching a bus from one of the many stops located on the arrivals level of the T1 Terminal. look out for the timetables service between Bondi Junction and Burwood which includes a stop of at T1 International terminal.

you can check out more info about fares, timetables and connections to other parts of Sydney here www.sydneybuses.info

trains
now this is probably the easiest way to get into the CBD. you can jump on a train at the station located at the northern end of the international terminal which you can get to from the arrivals level. just look for the train signs pointing you to the right direction.

when you have found the station look for the Airport Link : the Airport Link is the best way into the city. the Link runs every 10 to 15 mins and only takes about 15 mins to reach the CBD. and it only costs $14.00. the Airport Link takes you to the City Circle line ( check out our transport page to find out what that actually means) from there you can jump on any other train to get to any other train station in and around Sydney.

Cost of Living in Sydney

on Tuesday, 30 November 1999. Posted in Other Sydney Guides 2190

Beer? Bread? Milk? Travel? Rent? What it costs and how it compares to home.

wanna know what you’re up for re the living cost in Sydney? here we’ve compiled the basics about a few Sydney expenses to expect (give or take).

food
check out Woolworths – big chain supermarket – for the current cost of milk, bread, toothpaste and other everyday stuff.
small note: milk comes in litres! not pints. for a litre of milk you’re looking at around $3.00

see grocery prices @ Woolworths >

travel
the cheapest way to travel around Sydney on the train or bus is with a weekly ticket. much cheaper way then buying a single ticket each day. grab them at any newsagency or railway station.

read more about Sydney trains >
read more about Sydney buses >

train
rather than give you a giant list, here’s a few typical prices. from Sydney airport into the central station it’ll cost you about $15.00 one way. Inner city travel will cost you about $3.00 each way. City to Bondi junction ( near bondi beach) will cost about $4.00

get train prices @ CityRail>

bus
bus prices vary depending on how many zones you need to travel through to get to your destinations. note; these zones are nothing like the zones you find in London. we wish. It can be a little confusing but just ask the bus driver until you get the hang of it.typical prices; Inner city travel will cost you about $3.20 one way, city to bondi beach $4.00 one way, City to Manly will cost you about $5.00 one way. I get a green travel pass for the week to go from the Northern Beaches to Wynyard and it costs me $40.00 a week. watch our transport video for some hot tips too. and check out the prices here.

car hire
if you have a drivers licence then you can hire a car. Pretty simple.

Australia Car Hire

rent

ok so this one’s kinda hard to give exact costings on, cos it really depends on so much. eg. how much of a beach bum you are☺, how close you want to live to the city, how many people you’re living with, closeness to transport, bills,...well you get the idea. check out our syd accomm vid for tips
here is a ballpark figure for the popular zones:
• Bondi Beach: single room xxxx
• Inner City: Single room xxxx
• Manly: Single room pw xxxx
be sure to watch our Sydney suburbs video and click here for a map of Sydney >

random list of other Sydney prices
we really could go on about all sorts of London expenses, so here’s our random (yet handy) list of ballpark figures on some of the other necessities.
• local beer: $6.00 for a schooner of blonde, new or carlton (funny how this is at the top of the list)
• pub meal: $15-20.00 (well all that drinking gets you hungry)
• chocolate: $2.20
• nightclub entry: $25.00
• coffee: $3.20 for a large ( none of that starbucks crap either, we are talking real coffee)
• concert ticket: $100 and upwards (depends who you see)
• Sydney Festival tickets: $90.00 upwards
• sambo for lunch in the city: $6.00 upwards
